Knight Hennessy Scholarship:

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University cultivates a broad, multidisciplinary community of up-and-coming leaders from all over the world and mentors them as they become ready to tackle the complicated problems facing society. 

By participating in community service projects, workshops, meetings with leaders, domestic and international study excursions, and other opportunities for personal growth, scholars in the King Global Leadership Program will increase their knowledge, sharpen their talents, and fortify their character.

All 7 of Stanford University's schools have Knight-Hennessy Scholars. 

The broad group of scholars who make up the Knight-Hennessy Scholars is comprised of talented individuals. 

The program provides a framework for intentional leadership development and equips you to make a significant contribution to the world's well-being.

Knight Hennessy Scholarship Level of Study:

With certain exceptions, Stanford offers full-time master's and doctoral degrees in any discipline (including, but not limited to, DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD):

Candidates for the Doctor of Science in Law (JSD), the Honors Cooperative Program, the Master of Liberal Arts, as well as current Stanford PhD candidates who are adding an MA or MS degree in their field of study.

Knight Hennessy Scholarship Benefits:

Knight Hennessy scholars at Stanford are given financial support for up to three years of any graduate degree. 

For the first three years of their graduate studies, Knight-Hennessy Scholars are given:
  • a fellowship that is used to pay for tuition and related costs directly
  • a stipend to cover living and educational costs (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses)
  • a grant for travel that will pay for one round-trip economy ticket to and from Stanford each year.
Additional funds for particular years:
  • Scholars who enroll for the first time are given a one-time relocation grant to help with moving expenses and/or technology purchases.
  • Students in their second and third years have the option to apply for additional funding to support extracurricular activities.

Knight Hennessy Scholarship Eligibility:

There are two fundamental criteria for eligibility.

1. First, you must apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, such as, but not limited to, a DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD program in addition to applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS). 

At least one of the following four requirements must be met by you:

  1. You are applying separately but simultaneously to KHS and a full-time graduate program at Stanford so that you can begin both in the same academic year.
  2. You will apply to KHS so that you can start both in the same year even if you have already been admitted to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program and have chosen to defer your start date.
  3. You are a current graduate student at Stanford who will submit an application to add a second full-time graduate degree program so that you can begin KHS and the new program in the same academic year.
  4. You are currently enrolled in your first year of the PhD program at Stanford, and you plan to apply to KHS so that you can begin KHS in your second year of PhD enrollment.

2. Second, you must have graduated with a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university in January 2016 or later. 

You must have received your bachelor's degree by January 2016 or later to apply to join the cohort in 2023, and you must have received your bachelor's degree by January 2017 or later to apply to join the cohort in 2024.

How to Apply for the Knight Hennessy Scholarship?

You must simultaneously and separately apply to both your Stanford graduate degree program and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program in order to be considered for the scholarship.

The Knight Hennesy Program has a 12-October-2022, 1:00 PM Pacific Time, deadline. Each graduate degree program at Stanford has a different application date.
